Dear NAHJ Bay Area members and friends, this is your president Cresencio Rodriguez-Delgado! It’s been a while since we shared an update on your chapter, so I hope this newsletter brings you up to speed with all of the activities we are planning and working on.

NAHJ Bay Area to host panel on immigration reporting at SPJ Region 11 Conference in San Francisco

The NAHJ Bay Area Chapter is helping put together an informational panel on immigration reporting that will take place during this year’s SPJ Northern California chapter’s conference at University of San Francisco. Please join us for the event to hear from speakers and check out the rest of the conference.

Are you attending the 2025 NorCal Emmy® Gala Weekend in California’s Capital?

If you plan to attend this gala weekend taking place June 13-15 in Sacramento, PLEASE visit us during the first annual California Correspondents Reception. This reception will take place BEFORE the Emmy® Awards Dinner presentation.

This specific reception will take place Saturday, June 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. It will bring together journalists, dignitaries, elected officials, capitol staffers, and prominent communications professionals for a first-of-its-kind networking event.

Look for the NAHJ Bay Area chapter’s table, and connect with members of other organizations!

Join Us For Our Spring General Meeting At…

NAHJ Bay Area members and non-members: Please join us for our spring general meeting on April 22nd at the offices of El Tecolote newspaper. This community newspaper is in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District and we are so privileged to meet in their space later this month. El Tecolote has worked to amplify the voices of its community for decades.

I will send out another reminder as we get closer to the date. But please add this to your calendars!

Three scholarships will assist college, university students in the San Francisco Bay Area and surrounding areas

The late journalist Felix Elizalde taught for 25 years in high schools, community colleges, and universities in the East Bay, helping students hone their writing skills and encouraging them to continue their education. Mr. Elizalde, a 20-year member of the Alameda County Board of Education, was known for his tireless support of low-income and Latino students.

Now, the NAHJ Bay Area chapter is proud to help distribute THREE SCHOLARSHIPS in his name through the Felix Elizalde La Raza Media Education Fund.

Please encourage college and university students you know to please, please apply to receive this financial assistnace.

Two $2,500 scholarships and one $1,500 scholarship will be distributed to students. Applying is easy!

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Students must be attending a college or university in a Bay Area county. Students in neighboring counties are invited to submit a letter of interest but priority will be given to Bay Area students
  • Students may apply regardless of GPA, citizenship status, or year in college
  • Student must demonstrate financial need

Application Deadline: The deadline to apply for these scholarships is Monday, April 21, 2025

How to Apply:

  • Submit a letter of interest of no more than two pages demonstrating your financial need, describe your participation in journalism or media work during college (you may provide at least one work sample for review) AND tell us about the person who is the biggest inspiration in your life
  • Your letter must provide the following: Name, major, campus, year in college
  • Email your letter to Cresencio Rodriguez Delgado at: bayareachapter@nahj.org by Monday, April 21, 2025. Late submissions will not be considered

We want to promote and shout out some work from members and friends of NAHJ Bay Area chapter and the wider community:


“Undocumented America” course from UC Berkeley’s School of Journalism is open to students from across campuses and to the public. The course focuses on media analysis of current immigration coverage, and will include guest speakers as well as the opportunity to publish with local news outlets.

“K Onda” newsletter from KQED is elevating the voices of Latinx changemakers in the Bay Area. Subscribe here.
